Vaporia from the sea

Vaporia, our location

The most emblematic district of Hermoupolis

Only a few minutes from restaurants, cafes, bars and shops, Amare Boutique Suites is situated less than 4 minutes walk from the center of the island's beating heart and only a short distance from some of the star attractions. Thanks to our close proximity to Asteria, the much celebrated urban beach of Syros, you can enjoy your swim with the spectacular backdrop of neoclassical mansions rising above the water.

A beautiful place to explore and a magnet for architecture enthusiasts, Hermoupolis is a landmark of neoclassicism in itself; an unexpected mix between the urban culture of an age that set the foundations of modern Greece and the enticing Cyclades setting.

Exit the Amare Boutique Suites to walk around Vaporia, our neighbourhood and the most aristocratic quarter of Hermoupolis. Stroll the cobblestone alleys to gaze at magnificent neoclassical buildings hovering over the sea as if they are about to sail, explaining the name Vaporia (Ships). As you wander around you’d come to realise that this is a much photogenic town, where the eclectic architectural style incorporates elements from Greek antiquity with Byzantine and northern European architecture, all within the context of Neoclassicism. Here photo opportunities abound at every turn.

In your walks you are bound to come across the Miaouli Square; the heart of Syros with imposing buildings, tall palm trees, a marble music stage with reliefs of the ancient Greek god of music Apollo and the Muses as well as cafes and bars. But most importantly, the location of the crown jewel of Syros; the Town Hall of Hermoupolis. The most photographed attraction is a 19th-century architectural masterpiece and a cultural icon celebrating the rich heritage of the island. Built in 1898, when Hermoupolis was a bustling metropolis, the symbol of Syros was designed by the influential architect Ernst Ziller to convey the message of wealth and power. During that time, renowned architects were hired to create a town in glorification of neoclassical beauty.

Be sure to hit spots like the Apollo Municipal Theatre, the Temple of Saint Nicholas, the former home of the Club Hellas that nowadays hosts the Cultural Center with the Cycladic Art Replicas Exhibition, the monumental two-story marble building of the Customs office, the beautiful marble mansion of the Historical Archive of the Cyclades and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to see the authentic masterpiece of The Dormition of the Virgin, one of the earlier, and rare, works of the leading figure of the Renaissance widely  known as El Greco.

History buff or not, take some time to visit the Archaeological Museum of Hermoupolis with exhibits from the Early Cycladic and Byzantine periods and prehistoric finds from Kastri and Chalandriani, the most important fortified settlement of the 3rd millennium BC in the Aegean. Or the former lead shot factory that now houses the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis with exhibitιons from the glorious industrial era of Syros.
